I’m a journalist, columnist and blogger writing for major German newspapers and magazines, amongst them Die Zeit, Zeit Campus, Der Freitag and Taz. Articles written in English can be found here.
As a public speaker, I speak about Islam, racism, feminism and social media at universities, conferences, on TV, press & radio. My TEDxOxbridge Talk on “The Power Of Stories” can be watched here.
I also work as a social media consultant for businesses and organisations – currently a a full time consultant for social media, innovation and communication at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
Starting my column at Taz in 2010, I became the first hijabi columnist in Germany. In 2011 I was listed amongst the “Top 30 until 30” journalists by Medium Magazin. My blog “Ein Fremdwörterbuch” was nominated for the Grimme Online Award in 2011. 2012 I was portrayed as one of 50 personalities in the book “50 Jahre 50 Menschen” for the 50th anniversary of German-Turkish migration. I have also contributed to the books “Skandal! Die Macht öffentlicher Empörung” (Feb 2009) and “Manifest der Vielen” (Feb 2011).
Currently I am based in Oxford, UK, together with my husband Ali Aslan Gümüsay who is pursuing his PhD at Oxford University. When I’m not writing or traveling around the world, I film, do photography and drawings (see portfolio).
ZAHNRÄDER | I am the co-founder and served three years as the press-officer of the Zahnräder network for active, creative and intellectual Muslim entrepreneurs in Germany (ranked amongst the top 20 visionairy ideas in 2011 by Generation-D and financed e.g. by the European Union Youth in Action Programme) and am involved in various social projects on areas such as social blogging, diversity, racism and feminism.
#SCHAUHIN | In September 2013 I initiated together with other activists (e.g. Sabine Mohamed and Jamie Schearer) the hashtag #SchauHin to highlight and raise awareness for daily racism in Germany. For a few days #SchauHin remained a trending topic in Germany and sparked interesting conversations. We are currently working on new projects to continue the discourse and debates on different levels. As sum up in German can be found here. Visit our website or facebook page.
Although I mostly write in German, you can find texts in Turkish and English, too. For English articles, click here and my talk at TEDxOxbrige can be found below or here. A few pieces in which I was featured in English: A BBC discussion with Thilo Sarrazin (listen from 43.00), a documentary by Canal Futura on Islam in Europe and my comment at Al Jazeera English stream on colonial beauty images (videos can also be found below at “TV”).
My blog also contains creative short stories mostly focussing on minorities and the neglected of society. Through these stories I aim to build cultural bridges, break down stereotypes and animate readers to rethink their values and worldviews.
My work has been featured in several major newspapers and periodicals, including Die Zeit, ZeitOnline, Deutsche Welle, Taz, Deutschland Radio, Hürriyet, Der Freitag – but also on international publications such as Foreign Affairs and Al Jazeera English.
